Months earlier, he had discovered financial irregularities involving one of the company's senior managers.
He had threatened to report them.
Then he backed down.
The manager's name was Victor Kane.
Victor had disappeared from the company two weeks earlier.
Officer Cole asked why.
Daniel wouldn't answer.
Margaret watched her son carefully.
“What are you hiding?”
Daniel finally broke.
“I owed him money.”
“How much?”
“Twenty thousand dollars.”
Margaret stared at him.
“You endangered Lily because of twenty thousand dollars?”
“No!”
Daniel's voice cracked.
“I never wanted Lily hurt.”
“But you knew someone dangerous was involved.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“I thought I could handle it.”

“No, Daniel. That's what people say when they're too afraid to admit they've lost control.”
