Chapter 7 - The Secret in the BasementThe police returned to the house.
Officer Cole inspected the plumbing.
The burst pipe was real.
But there was something strange.
The main water valve had been deliberately reopened.
Someone had increased the flow after the pipe began leaking.
In the basement, officers discovered wet footprints.
Small ones.
And larger ones.
One set belonged to Daniel.
The other did not.
Officer Cole crouched beside them.
“Who else lives here?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No one.”
“Anyone visit?”
“No.”
She looked toward the basement stairs.
“Then we have a problem.”
A camera had been installed near the utility room.
Its memory card was missing.
Daniel stared at the empty mount.
He whispered:
“I didn't take it.”

Margaret, standing behind him, felt a chill.
Someone else had been inside the house.
