Chapter 17 - A Different Kind of FamilyHealing did not happen overnight.

There were nightmares.

There were difficult questions.

There were mornings when Lily refused to go upstairs.

But there were also birthdays.

Pancakes.

Bedtime stories.

And laughter.

Daniel learned that being a father wasn't about saying he loved his daughter.

It was about proving it when nobody was watching.

Margaret learned something too.

Sometimes protecting a child meant protecting them from the person you loved.

Months later, Lily's social worker approved supervised visits becoming regular family visits.

The little girl ran into Daniel's arms.

“Daddy!”

Daniel hugged her carefully.

“I missed you.”

Lily whispered:

“I missed you too.”

Margaret watched from the doorway.

Her heart still hurt.

May you like

But for the first time, the pain no longer felt like the end.

It felt like proof that something mattered.
