Chapter 4 - Grandma Called the PoliceThe dispatcher answered.

“911. What's your emergency?”
“My granddaughter is three years old. She's been locked inside a flooding bedroom.”
Margaret gave the address.
Daniel stared at her.
“Mom, don't do this.”
She turned away from him.
“There is a child in danger.”
“I said I didn't mean for this to happen.”
Margaret's voice hardened.
“You had time to stop it.”
Silence.
Daniel lowered his head.
The dispatcher asked questions.
Was Lily breathing?
Was she injured?
Was there an adult inside the house?
Margaret answered every question.
Outside, sirens began to rise through the storm.
Daniel suddenly grabbed his jacket.
Margaret watched him.
“Where are you going?”
“I need to get help.”
“You're not leaving.”
He stopped.
“Mom…”
“Sit down.”
For the first time in years, Daniel looked like a frightened little boy instead of a grown man.
Then headlights appeared through the rain.
Two police cruisers stopped outside.
