Officer Rebecca Cole knelt beside her.
“What's your name, sweetheart?”
“Lily.”
“Lily, can you tell me what happened?”
Lily looked at Daniel.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daddy locked me in.”
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“She doesn't understand.”
Officer Cole stood.
“Sir, let her speak.”
Daniel swallowed.
“It was supposed to be a joke.”
Margaret stared at him in disbelief.
“A joke?”
“I wanted to scare her.”
“You locked a three-year-old in a room while water was coming in.”
“I didn't know the pipes would burst!”
Officer Cole looked toward the flooded room.
“Then why didn't you open the door?”
